Leather, suede and patina: how material affects an MTO shoe

Surface, shine and colour affect how formal a shoe appears.

In MTO shoes, material is one of the most important decisions. The same oxford or loafer can look very different in smooth calf leather, suede, patent leather or hand-finished patina. The choice affects both style and care.

Smooth leather is the most versatile choice

Smooth calf leather works well for business, formal wear and suits. Black is the most formal, while dark brown and cognac are softer. Smooth leather lasts well when cared for regularly with cream and brushing.

Suede makes the shoe more relaxed

Suede adds softness and works well in smart casual dressing. It is excellent for loafers, chukka boots and more relaxed derbies. Suede needs protection against moisture, but with proper care it is a very practical material.

Patina adds individuality

Patina finishing gives the shoe colour, depth and a handmade feel. It suits a client who wants a more personal pair without choosing a model that is too unusual. Patina looks best when the rest of the outfit gives it space.
