What is the difference between women’s and men’s made-to-measure suits?

Women’s and men’s made-to-measure suits may seem like the same idea, but their design often starts from different questions. Both aim for good fit, but body proportions, silhouette and use affect construction in different ways.

A men’s suit often starts from the shoulder line

In a men’s suit, shoulder, chest, waist and trouser line form the whole. In the jacket, it matters how the shoulder sits, how the collar rests on the neck and how the jacket closes without pulling.

In women’s suits, the silhouette varies more

In women’s made-to-measure suits, the waist can be emphasised, a straighter business line created, a softer jacket built or a trouser suit designed for formal use. A skirt, waistcoat and different trouser shapes can also be part of the whole.

Construction can be soft or structured

Men’s suits often use a clear jacket construction that shapes the shoulder. In women’s suits, the construction can be lighter, more flexible or very structured depending on the client’s preference.

Purpose matters a lot

  • For work, a restrained fabric and easy combinability often work best.
  • For celebrations, a more striking colour, lining or cut can be chosen.
  • For travel, choose a fabric that recovers well from wrinkles.
  • For year-round use, lightweight or midweight wool is often the safest choice.

A good made-to-measure suit is not a copy of men’s or women’s ready-to-wear. It is designed for the wearer’s measurements, everyday life and personal style.
