MTO shoe size and fit: what should the client know?

A good shoe fits firmly but does not squeeze in the wrong places.

In shoe sizing, the number is only the starting point. The same size can feel different in another model because last, toe shape, instep height and material flexibility affect fit. In MTO shoes, accurate starting information is therefore important.

The last defines the shoe shape

The last is the shape around which the shoe is built. It affects toe shape, width, heel feel and how much room there is for the instep. That is why two shoes in the same size can feel very different.

How should a new shoe feel?

A good leather shoe may feel firm when new, but it should not cause sharp pain or strong pressure. Slight heel movement may decrease with wear, but if the shoe clearly lifts off the foot or the toes are squeezed, the size or last is probably not right.

What information should the client share?

  • The size and model of current shoes that fit well.
  • Whether the foot is narrow, wide or high at the instep.
  • Where shoes usually rub.
  • Whether the shoe is worn with thicker or thinner socks.
  • How much walking is done during the day.
