MTO shoes: what does made-to-order mean in footwear?

In MTO shoes, the final product is built from the combination of model, material, sole and finishing.

MTO means made-to-order. In footwear, it usually means the client chooses a complete combination from existing construction and model options: shoe model, last, material, colour, sole and finishing.

MTO is not the same as a fully handmade bespoke shoe

A bespoke shoe is typically built around an individual last and several fittings. An MTO shoe is based on existing models and lasts that are customised through choices. For the client, it offers more personality than ready-made shoes, but a clearer process than fully individual bespoke.

What does the client usually choose?

  • The shoe model, such as oxford, derby, loafer, monk strap or boot.
  • Leather or main material, including colour and surface.
  • Sole construction according to purpose.
  • Details such as welt, stitching, laces, lining or initials.
  • Purpose: business, formal wear, travel, everyday use or smart casual.

A good MTO shoe starts with purpose. If the shoe is for suits and office wear, the result is different from a shoe for travel, city walking or relaxed weekend dressing.
